DOUBLE HUNG - On double hung windows both sashes in the window frame are operable, meaning they move up and down. The sashes on a double hung window also tilt in for easy cleaning.
HOPPER – a bottom-pivoting awning window that opens by tilting vertically, typically to the inside.
SLIDING - a window that open by sliding horizontally to left or right. Can have two or three panes.
WINDOW PARTS DICTIONARY:
FRAME – The enclosure in which window sash, door panels or fixed glazing are mounted.
GLAZING – Glass or other material that is placed into a window or door; or the process of installing the material
HEAD – The horizontal top portion of the main frame.
HINGES - A jointed or flexible device that allows the turning or pivoting of a door or window
JAMB – The main vertical members forming the sides of a door or window frame.
MUNTINS – A decorative lineal that can be applied to the exterior, interior, and in between panes of glass to simulate a true divided lite window or door.
SASH – A single assembly of stiles and rails made into a frame for holding glass.
SILL – The main horizontal member forming the bottom of the frame of a window or a sliding door.
TRANSOM - A window that fits over the top of a door or window, primarily for additional light and aesthetic value.
BAY - a window space projecting outward from the main walls of a building and forming a bay in a room.
BOW or CURVED - a curved bay window. Bow windows are designed to create space by projecting beyond the exterior wall of a building, and to provide a wider view of the garden or street outside and typically combine four or more casement windows, which join together to form an arch.
CASEMENT - a window that is attached to its frame by one or more hinges. Casement windows are hinged at the side. Windows hinged at the top are referred to as awning windows, and ones hinged at the bottom are called hoppers.
SINGLE HUNG – Has a fixed (non-operable) top sash that does not move or tilt in, but the bottom sash operates up and down.
